Horizons Foundation Newsletter - February 2004

Welcome to the February 2004 monthly newsletter from Horizons Foundation.

In Belti, Moldova, several students are showing great promise on some musical instruments supplied by Horizons Foundation. Last year, funds were supplied for a couple guitars (bass, lead and acoustic), some keyboards and a piano. Since Al has tried for several days to copy some of the pictures sent from Moldova to you and is still unable to get pictures and email together, this month's newsletter is slow in arriving.

A new laptop battery and some software (QuickBooks Nonprofit Premier and a couple operating systems) are on their way to Calvin Klaus in Belti as of late February. First to some friends in Ohio who are traveling to Moldova, then onto some of their friends going to Belti, and then onto Calvin.

While this has been happening in Belti, Moldova, good things have been happening right here in St. Charles, Missouri. On December 30, 2003 a young couple that had just purchased a newer car called Horizons Foundation and asked if they could donate a car, immediately. We said, of course, all that was needed was a 'statement of value' from a reliable expert and that Horizons would be glad to supply them with a donation receipt.

Within 24 hours, the car was donated to Horizons and during the month of January it was repaired to pass all state inspections. In mid-February it was sold to a single mom raising three boys for $25.00. She had recently started a new job and needed a car with a working heater in it to more comfortably get back and forth to work. There were some very cold days in St Louis during the winter and she always took a blanket to try to keep as warm as possible on the way to work. Naturally, upon receipt of the car, there were lots of tears of thanksgiving and her inner kindness exploded outward. She said that she was going to give her old car to her oldest son, because even if the heater didn't work, it still was a better car than the one he was driving to work and that she was going to have him give his car to a couple who didn't even have a car, so they could get back and forth to work a little easier. By the last day of February the transaction was complete. Her son's car had been donated to the couple without a car, which then made some much-needed repairs and put the car on the road again.

This is the 2nd car that someone has given to Horizons Foundation within the last four months. Each car has been repaired and passed all state inspections and then sold for $25.00 to someone desperately needing better transportation.

In mid-February Al met a gentlemen in St Louis who has invented and designed an interlocking concrete and/or brick system to quickly build walls for buildings. In fact, a Holiday Inn has been built in San Antonio Texas using this system. It's very quick because no mortar is required to build a wall! A four-foot high, eight-foot long wall can be built using this system in less than FIVE minutes, by unskilled labor! This gentleman, Norm Hancock, wants to use this system to build orphanages, children's homes, churches, schools and other charitable-use buildings around the world. Al committed to try to help him a) finish the patenting process and to b) find a major user within the United States that will use/purchase this idea. By the end of February Al met another gentlemen from Northwestern Wisconsin while attending a Dr. Tom Hill Eagle Summit meeting, who is in the sand, gravel, and concrete business that is going to help make this happen. Thank you Paul Ayres! Oh, by the way Paul is going to help make the introduction to a principal of a major supplier in this business, the size of Home Depot or Lowe's. More later.

Other great news to report: an orphanage in Malawi, Africa named 'Hope for a Hopeless Child' may be gaining additional support from International Orphans Foundation, Inc. as a result of an introduction we were able to make. If you would like to know more about how 25 orphans were rescued by Hope for a Hopeless Child, please contact Ron Williamson at ronw@rjwgroup.com. If you would like to know more about how orphans are brought to the United States for adoption by International Orphans Foundation, Inc., please contact Vicky Wu or Zach Bradley at vwu@orphansfoundation.org.

We continue to be in contact with folks in Peru and Nicaragua to see how Horizons Foundation can help to rescue children. As you know, Horizons Foundation has committed to providing a microlending enterprise in Peru. At this time the microlending fund has approximately $3500 donated with the goal being $20,000. This is becoming a higher priority project as we pursue the concept of building self-sustaining, perpetual projects to save homeless and abandoned children. From Managua, Nicaragua we have received sketches of how the high school for 150 kids could be expanded. We will be pursuing both these projects diligently during March. Last month, we reported on the need for funds for college education for 2 girls in Managua. As a result of your generosity, commitments have been received to fund both girls entire college education.

Thank you and Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow!

In His Service,

Al Lockhart
