"Where there is no purpose, there is an abuse of time, an abuse of talent and an abuse of resources." - Simon T. Bailey
Horizons Foundation's purpose is to help the helpless, homeless, orphaned or abandoned children around the world. We strive for excellence in every endeavor. Our partners in Odessa, Ukraine just received an unanticipated honor as described by Sergei Svistun, the Executive Director of Hope House and First Steps (the feeding program for the street children): (notes in parentheses added by Al)
UKRAINE - "Hello. I want to tell all of you good thing. "Thursday morning, the Oct.11th, I (Sergei Svistun) received a phone call from the mayor of Fontanka (on the outskirts of Odessa). He informed me that in the evening of the same day the Deputy Minister of the Department of the family, children and youth of Ukraine is coming to Fontanka for a meeting with the family. At first we were shocked and with fair waited her coming. Moreover there was no water and electricity at the House that day but we had to get prepare kids for the meeting with the Deputy Minister.
"In the evening at 5PM, pastor, me, tutor Dana (the full time tutor employed by Hope House to help bring the children up to grade level) and all the family came to the village's club-house. There were more 6 families with many children in it and one orphanage of family kind, like our, from Fontanka, gathered in the club for the meeting. When the Deputy Minister arrived, we had a big concert for families. After the concert the Deputy Minister started to speak. She said thanks to God for the people like Alla (the new foster Mom) and Sasha (the new foster Dad), who were not afraid to take the responsibility for kids in such a difficult time. The most amazing thing for us was that our house is among of top five foster families in Ukraine. The lady Deputy Minister also promised to give to the kids some pecuniary aid after the New Year.

"Then there were gifts, pictures with the mayor and the Deputy Minister. She was amazed by the fact that after the concert our kids came up and said 'Thank you' to her, nobody else did it.
"She was so happy, she kissed kids, gave them hug, talked to them.
"We are very thankful to God that he uses us in His work. And especially pleasant is when government acknowledges it. Please, pray for us, we have a lot to be done: and we for our turn will pray for you.
"There are some pictures (attached) from this day.
"Sergey" How about that for quantifiable success?! Talk about faith in action - you make it happen!
PERU - During the past ten days, several meetings and conversations have been held with couples desiring to visit the new 2-story children's home just completed in Pacasmayo, Peru. If you would like to be involved in an educational/planning/working/exciting/life-changing trip, please give Al a call at 1.800.701.9313 or 636.724.1264.
As of this writing, we are still awaiting the government's final approval for the license for the children's home. Still awaiting approval, but ready to begin Phase 2 with Go Ye Ministries. Phase 2 focuses on establishing an agricultural center on 30 hectares of land (over 65 acres), which have recently been donated to GYM. Multiple projects have been identified within Phase 2: a) purchasing a diesel truck or van - $8500, b) digging a water well 16 inches in diameter to a distance of about 110 feet deep - $7700, c) installing a diesel powered water pump - $1200, d) installing a drip system on 8 acres of property for different crops - $6000, e) building a simple ranch style house on the property with a gated courtyard to store farm equipment - $9400, f) purchasing a diesel powered tractor with 19-24 horsepower - $9200 and g) adding guest rooms near the new children's home for visiting doctors, medical teams and visitors - $8700. These projects will be reviewed during our trip in January 2005.
Come, join us, we really need 'your shoulder to the plow'.
Next month, we'll tell you about an amazing couple, just married in early October, who asked their wedding guests to forego any personal wedding gifts for themselves. But, instead, they asked all their guests to make a small donation to the project of building this children's home in Pacasmayo, Peru. They want to build a legacy and leave a family legacy by making a difference in Pacasmayo. Wow, what love! We're surprised that they could find wedding clothes big enough to go around their big, big hearts! More next month.
ZAMBIA - Al and Charlotte had the honor of nominating Dr. Jo Ann Lyon, the founder of World Hope International to receive an Eagle Laureate award. This award recognizes an individual who has made an outstanding improvement in the human condition. Dr. Lyon was awarded this honor on October 22, 2004 in Santa Barbara, California for her work of founding World Hope International in 1996 and building it to its current size. World Hope now has over 300 employees worldwide and is providing aid and assistance in over 30 countries. She received a beautiful trophy crowned by an eagle's head mounted on a beautiful wood base. The award also carried a cash award. When Dr. Lyon received the check, she exclaimed, "More wells. This will be used to dig more wells in Zambia."
World Hope International has been our partner in Sierra Leone and now in Zambia. A program has been started within the last year to provide assistance to Zambia called the Orphan Trust Project. Aids has devastated the child bearing age population. Villages all over Zambia now have grandmas and the grandpas caring for orphaned children and their remaining sick parents. Dr. Lyon spoke of the assistance that had been provided in Sierra Leone and how if a village has a well, they can water the crops necessary to grow the grain to support the village.
After she was presented with her award, gentlemen on the selection committee stood and announced that a box would be placed at the rear of the meeting room for additional donations. That was on Friday night and on the following Monday evening he called Al and said that exactly $5000 had been pledged and raised. Only then did Al inform him that a one-time donation of $5000 provides all the funds necessary to save one village from extinction. It provides enough funds to dig a well, purchase the animals necessary to create a self-sustaining animal multiplication program, and all the seed to start the crops that create a self-sustaining livelihood for the entire village. Truly, there was divine intervention in that place, at that time!

TEC CHAIRS CHALLENGE - Horizons Foundation has received a challenge by two The Executive Committee (TEC) Chairmen, one in Orange County, California and one in Houston, Texas to develop a partnership program whereby TEC members can contribute to establishing small businesses overseas. Al will begin drafting this partnership program during November. TEC groups are very special groups of business owners and chief executives that gather together in groups of 8 to 12 all around the country to discuss solving common problems. These are excellent 'mastermind' groups. We're honored to be challenged by chairmen of this caliber.
