Horizons Foundation Newsletter - August 2005

God continues to do amazing things! Two-thirds of 2005 is now in the history books. At the beginning of 2005, Horizons Foundation (HF) identified 7 projects to be completed during 2005. As of right now, over two-thirds of those projects are nearing completion. Praise God!

PERU
  • Microlending program starting well
  • SEVEN new orphans' homes to be built
  • Portable well-drilling rig to be purchased

The microlending program has exceeded the goal of raising $42,000 for 2005.

We are excited to see how this program is scaling up and have already set an expanded goal of raising a minimum of $153,000 for 2006. As we scale up by making more and more loans, our staff is implementing good lending and loan repayment procedures. It's a big job! We see the need for additional staff, as additional funds are made available for making the microloans. By the end of next month, Al will share some more success stories as we learn how these small loans improve lives. This project is on track to becoming a great success.

As identified in the last newsletter, 3 acres near the orphanage in Pacasmayo, Peru were purchased by our partners, Go Ye Ministries (GYM), during the last week of July. We refer to this property as 'The Outback Mansano' because it's near the rear of the orphanage compound. In fact, it's less than 500 feet from the current orphanage compound. Within two weeks of acquiring clear title to this property, our good friends at World Orphans agreed to provide funds for seven, (yes - SEVEN) houses to be built on this property for additional orphans' homes. The property is large enough that plans are also being created to build a few small 'storefronts' along one edge of the property for microentrepreneurs to house their businesses. Perhaps a metal working/welding shop, a series of retail shops, etc. We still plan to raise $8000 to build 4 additional simple houses on one edge of the property for misplaced persons. Who knows where God will lead this project?

After much discussion between the principals of GYM and HF two weeks ago, Horizons Foundation committed to fund the purchase of a portable drilling rig for 'punching' water wells. GYM recently spent almost $6000 to have a well hand-dug to a depth of over 80 feet and additional wells are needed for additional water at the orphanage compound and 'The Outback Mansano'. We were faced with the choice of hand digging 2 more wells with a probable cost of almost $12,000. Or, we could purchase a portable rig for just over $7500, plus $1000 in supplies for each well. Needless to say, the portable rig has been identified and will be purchased during the next week, for shipment to Peru by the end of September. As you know, we always try to make the money work twice, and this portable drilling rig will be used to help other charitable efforts near Pacasmayo and will possibly be used to dig wells 'for a profit' with all of the profits coming back to support the orphanage.

September 2005 is the long awaited month for orphans to begin to be placed in our brand new orphanage. The orphanage is sparkling clean, it's completely furnished, the 'parent' couples are in place awaiting their new children, and GYM's executive level staff is in the process of selecting the children. Don't you wish you could be a mouse in the corner and watch these kids being brought into a brand new environment where they will be taught about God's love for them?

MOLDOVA

  • New Elim School WILL remain OPEN!
  • New marketing approach launched for 'Red ribbon Bread'
  • Bethany orphanage has new families and summer camp

As you know from our June-July 2005 newsletter: "The New Elim School in Chisinau, Moldova remains open as almost all non-government schools in Moldova are closed as a result of new restrictive legislation. As we have reported to you before, the Moldovan Communist government took measures in 2004 to attempt to legally close all non-government schools in Moldova. This included all private Christian schools, like the New Elim School, created for the kids at the Bethany orphanage."

Well, the New Elim School will remain open as Horizons Foundation loaned Bethany Christian Center 20,000 Euros for their endowment.

As a result of this process, Bethany Christian Center has embarked on a new marketing approach for their bakery. We have launched the 'Red Ribbon Bread' brand and will be watching and reporting how this new concept for selling the delicious, organic bread from this bakery proceeds. We're expecting profits to double, and then double again by the end of this year. We are confident that at some point in time during the next couple of years that the 'for profit' enterprises created with Bethany Christian Center will supply the funds to support this orphanage.

Pastor Doru Cirdei, the Executive Director of the orphanage reports: "Two more families (Alexandru and Olga Penzari and Vladimir and Maria Oprea), members of Philadelphia Church, have dedicated themselves as parents for the children at the Bethany Christian Center. In the eight families that now exist at Bethany, there are 80 children. Sixty-six of them used to be street children and 14 of them are birth children of the couples that are working as adoptive parents. We are praising God for those dedicated people and for those people who are faithful supporters of this wonderful ministry."

"During the period of Jun 27 - July 02, 2005, the children at Bethany Christian Center rejoiced at the summer camp that was organized by Philadelphia Church. Christian youth volunteers served with dedication to plant the Devine seed in the hearts of those precious children and to put a smile on their faces."

UKRAINE

  • New playground built for children at Hope House
  • Kerry and Carole Allison going to Odessa for 4 years

Remember the pictures of the flooded fields and flooded roads near Hope House in Odessa, Ukraine? During the last week of May, heavy rains caused flooding in and around Hope House. Thankfully, a team from Canada World Hope arrived in July and not only re-seeded all crops, repaired the basement of Hope House, but also built a playground for the children living at Hope House.

September marks the beginning of a new chapter for Hope House. Kerry and Carole Allison, retired educators from Sussex, New Brunswick, Canada are moving to Odessa for a 4 year ministry assignment with World Hope in Ukraine. They've been there before, spending months working on Hope House and loving the children there. We're expecting even many more great things when the Allison's arrive later this month, especially now that Kerry has just the right power saw and attachments (from Horizons Foundation). After they settle in, we will address Horizons Foundation' number 5 priority project for 2005: "Fund $8000 to build a Greenhouse in order to start a profit-making business to help support the children's home."

ZAMBIA

  • Need sponsors for another Orphan Trust this year
  • Please pray with us for wisdom
  • Our 6-step program to Self-Sustainability

During the next four months, our current top priority fund raising project is to: "Fund another $5000 to sponsor another Orphan Trust in cooperation with World Hope International to purchase animals and seed for one village so the surviving adults can care for the orphaned children due to their parent's death to AIDS."

There are many areas in many countries where AIDS has brought tremendous destruction to thousands of families. As America suffers the tremendous destruction brought by hurricane Katrina, let's dig deep to really change a person's life.

HURRICANE KATRINA

If you would like to help us assist our neighbors on the Gulf Coast, feel comfortable in sending a check to Horizons Foundation. We have reliable partners in and near the disaster areas who know exactly what is needed. We just hung up the phone from Child Evangelism Fellowship, where they requested our assistance in delivering goods to New Orleans. As always, know that 100% of your donation WILL go directly to the project of your choice. Just put the words ' Hurricane Katrina' in the memo of your check and we will stretch it as far as possible.
Please pray with us for wisdom as we are requested to cooperate with new opportunities in Africa. Currently, we know that the six step plan for rescuing children is working in different nations.

Our 6-step program includes 1) building attractive feeding stations for orphaned or abandoned children, 2) building homes or apartments where up to 12 children can live with their 'new' parents, 3) select couples to raise these children and provide an opportunity for the children to learn about God's love for them, 4) educate these children by providing a quality education including English classes and computer skills, 5) build local businesses where a portion or all of the profits of the businesses flow back into the support of the children's homes, creating a perpetual self-sufficiency, and 6) locate partners in North America to become donors and 'angel' investors to provide the seed money to expand these programs.

Our measurement of success continues to be to strive toward setting up local businesses where all or part of the income supports the orphanages or abandoned children who so desperately need your help.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROUS SUPPORT - YOU MAKE IT HAPPEN
