PERU - First children may arrive at orphanage later this month
- Water Drilling Rig arrives in Lima, Peru
- Playground for orphanage children being planned
- Adobe fence being built around 2 acres near orphanage
- Microlending program makes 1st mistake
Avis Goodhart of Go Ye Ministries, our partner in Pacasmayo Peru will be going into the Amazonian portion of Peru next week by special invitation of one of the local governments. She will be reviewing the paperwork of her staff regarding the advisability of "bringing some kids home with me". She's referring to some abandoned children that her staff had located near a town on the Amazon River, a town that may only be reached via boat. She'll fly into a nearby town and then take a 5 hour ride on a fast boat up the Amazon River. After 24 kids are brought to the current orphanage, additional water will be needed for the orphanage compound and 'The Outback Mansano' (a 2 acre parcel of land located within 100 yards of the orphanage that was recently purchased). A portable drilling rig for

'punching' water wells was purchased and shipped to Peru, arriving on October 4th. We were faced with the choice of hand digging two more wells with a cost of $12,000. Instead, we purchased a portable rig for just over $7500, plus $1000 in supplies and shipped all to Peru. Please pray with us that all customs issues are resolved quickly and that the rig may then be shipped to Pacasmayo. Not only are these kids being brought into the orphanage going to need extra water, but also, they are going to need a big playground area, with new playground equipment. This newly identified project will require approximately $14,000 to complete.
Plans include 1) purchasing the property of 6 families currently located at the back of the current orphanage, 2) building each family that currently has a house, a new house on the Outback Mansano, 3) moving the current exterior wall of the orphanage compound out to include the property formerly occupied by these families and then, 4) making and installing new playground equipment for use by all the kids living at the orphanage. Swings, slides, perhaps a 'jungle jim' will be installed in a new grassy area inside the expanded orphanage compound.
In preparation for this event, an adobe fence is being built around 'The Outback Mansano' in order to secure the property. This is the future site of the new homes for the families identified above. And it is also the future site of the Association Horizons Microlending office plus the 7 additional homes for additional orphans. As you may recall, Pacasmayo is located right on the ocean and many men in the town earn their living fishing in the ocean. During the past month, due to hurricane season and the resulting high winds, the fishermen were not allowed out to fish. Of course, this created an economic hardship for many families. Many men came to the orphanage compound looking for work and Fred Miller, also of Go Ye Ministries hired many of them to help build the adobe wall surrounding 'the Outback Mansano.' Considerable work was required as each block was hand laid for a fence 8 feet high, running for over one-half mile.
As work continues on building this big octagonal fence, Association Horizons (AH) has continued to expand. As of today's date over 20 loans have been made and we have 'stubbed our toe' for the first time. There is a butcher and his wife living in Pacasmayo who had separately joined Self Help Groups prior to June 2005. They had each requested a $300 loan, and after their Self Help Group agreed to support them, the loan was presented to the Board of Directors for approval. Both loans were approved and funded in June 2005: his loan to expand his meat butchering business and her loan to expand her business.
The butcher was presented with an opportunity to buy some cows, 'dirt cheap.' He knew he could butcher the cows and make a lot of money from the sale of the meat. The only problem was that his wife told him not to do it because she thought the price of the cows was too cheap and 'something wasn't right' about the deal. They argued. Finally, he insisted he was going to buy the cows, which he did. In fact, he spent almost all his $300 on the cows. A couple of evenings later, a group of men showed up at his front door demanding the return of their cows. They were very upset and were threatening to take him to jail for buying stolen cows, a serious criminal offense, So, he took them to where the cows were located, and gave them back the cows. However, the men were not satisfied with just the return of the stolen goods, they demanded compensation or they insisted they would take him to jail. They took him back home and demanded money from his wife. In order to keep her husband! out of jail, she handed over her $300.
So, there they were - no jail, no cows, and no money. And they had lost their ability to repay their loans and interest. AH personnel found out about the problem immediately and addressed it quickly. Since this happened, the butcher has made some interest payments, but has not been able to perform as agreed. Our response has been to formulate a plan whereby the butcher and his wife may receive a local financial mentor, weekly repayment plans and an additional small loan to increase the likelihood of total repayment. Needless to say, this has been a very humbling experience for the butcher. Perhaps in the future, he may listen to his wife a little more closely when she advises him not to let his greed outweigh her fear.
This incident has currently brought our loan repayment rate down to just over 90% on time. We'll be working closely with those involved to get the repayment rates back up to the goal of 100% pay back.
MOLDOVA
Charlotte and Al plan to take their extended family (all 21 people) to Moldova and Ukraine in November 2005. This is the realization of a long term dream as we are able to take our entire family, including Al's 86 year old mother, to see the orphanages, schools, and businesses God has given us an opportunity to assist. (Note: all expenses for this trip will be paid for by Charlotte and Al personally. No Horizons Foundation donations will be used for this trip.)
We are also in the preliminary planning stages for a February or March 2006 trip to Peru. Please let us know if you'd like to go to Pacasmayo with us at that time. Many opportunities to serve are opening up in Peru. If you want to see how an orphanage works in Peru, please come. If you want to help build an orphanage or a home, please come.
If you want to combine a missions trip and a sight seeing trip up to Machu Picchu, please come. As always, know that 100% of your donation WILL go directly to the project of your choice. Our 6-step program includes 1) building attractive feeding stations for orphaned or abandoned children, 2) building homes or apartments where up to 12 children can live with their 'new' parents, 3) selecting couples to raise these children and provide an opportunity for the children to learn about God's love for them, 4) educating these children by providing a quality education including English classes and computer skills, 5) building local bus! inesses where a portion or all of the profits of the businesses flow back into the support of the children's homes, creating a perpetual self-sufficiency, and 6) locate partners in North America to become donors and 'angel' investors to provide the seed money to expand these programs. Our measurement of success continues to be to strive toward setting up local businesses where all or part of the income supports the orphanages or abandoned children who so desperately need your help. Our goal is to have each orphanage and/or school entirely supported by profits from local businesses. THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROUS SUPPORT - YOU MAKE IT HAPPEN
