MOLDOVA'S NEW HORIZON
BELTI, MOLDOVA
Several years ago Horizons Foundation started a program for children at risk in Belti, Moldova. Over 100,000 children in Moldova are growing up without parental supervision. Many parents go out of Moldova to find work leaving their children with grandparents or other relatives who do not care for them. Since these children are not being cared for, they often get involved with the wrong things or people.
The children at risk program is an after school program called House of Life which teaches children through high school about Jesus and how to live a Godly life. It helps them receive education/skills to reach their life goals and provide for their future.
Horizons Foundation provides the income for the teachers in the program and other needs like musical instruments.
CHISINAU, MOLDOVA
Moldova, a former nation-state of the U.S.S.R., had hundreds of children living on the streets in its cities. In order to meet the needs of the homeless and abandoned children in Chisinau, Moldova, between 1998 and 2005, Horizons Foundation started and completed the following:
Bread of Life
Christian volunteers walked the streets to invite the homeless, begging children to come to a free lunch. The children came for lunch and classes in a large church building. Once the children became stable and demonstrated their acceptance of the help offered to them, they were selected to have a home in Bethany Homes for Children. Bethany Home for Children is a family style orphanage where up to 12 children live with a mother and father guardian in a home-like environment. Ten homes have been completed, which will continue fostering homeless and abandoned children.
Woodworking Shop
The woodworking shop was started to help complete the ‘summer homes’ that were on the campsite of the land (15 acres) purchased for the start of the Bethany Homes for Children. These summer homes did not have kitchens, bathrooms, running water, sewer or heat before remodeling. Horizons Foundation purchased the woodworking machines to help in the remodeling of the 10 homes.
Bethany Homes for Children
Volunteers from many countries came to rebuild and remodel the summer homes. As the homes were completed, ’parent couples’ moved into the homes with up to 12 homeless and abandoned children. The couples committed to raising their foster family until the kids are grown. The children discovered an honest lifestyle combining education, work and family life.
New Elim
The school was started to provide a Christian education for children of the Bethany Homes. It is a private school but any child in Chisinau can attend the school.
Shoes
A cottage industry for making shoes was started to teach valuable working skills and provide income for the orphanage families.
All the programs in Chisinau were started to help homeless and abandoned children and to continue the on-going care and sustenance of the children.
